Understanding The Main Battlestar Galactica Characters

By Cathy E. Dach

There are novels, comics, video games, and of course, television shows, based around the original storylines and characters of Battlestar Galactica. Television viewers were the first to be introduced to the characters that move the plot of BG when the original series of that name was released in the 1970's. From that time, its popularity has only grown and now it has found an international audience thanks to its most recent television programs and online games. There is clearly a huge group of fans behind this science fiction franchise because it is one of few that has been able to successfully move into the gaming world and maintain a strong audience. What are some of the traits of these characters and how will you deal with both friends and foes while playing a BG game?

The essential storyline of Battlestar Galactica is about human colonists who have been forced to leave their planet because of a war with the robotic and evil Cylons. The BG game follows this concept with a design that separates players and computer characters into one of these two factions. At the time you make your character you will be granted the option to play as a Human colonist or as a Cylon warrior. This decision is an important one since it will permanently affect the way you control your character, the types of weapons and vehicles you will be able to use, and the specific skills that your character will be able to develop.

Most of the fights in your Battlestar Galactica game will send you against either the Humans or the Cylon, depending on which side you have chosen to go with. Sometimes you will encounter other enemies that are common threats to both factions. Battles will occasionally be waged in space using high speed vehicles while others take place on land using hand to hand combat techniques and weapons.

Social elements of online games are also found in BG games that are designed as massively multiplayer online role playing games, or MMORPG's. Because you have to work along with other members of your faction you will often find that teaming up with other players is the best way to advance through the game.

Gamers can get to know the characters of Battlestar Galactica in an entirely new way thanks to video game developers. You have lots of options throughout the game, including the controversial early one of whether to play as Cylon or Human.
